Results tomorrow!

My NUS grades are coming out tomorrow and it totally blows. I mean, if I end up under probation, I'd just die. My mom'd definitely make me get a job and stuff. I hate working. :(

So someone said blogs should have reviews and such not speeches. But I still stand by Dr. Viggo's speech. That if you don't take an active role in politics or anything for that matter, you have no one to blame should you be governed by your inferiors. So I shall write a review on the last movie I caught. Which was Da Vinci Code with Flora.

First off, let me say how much the movie sucked. More so than the strongest industrial strength vacuum.

I'm a big fan of the "if you base your screenplay on something, don't make it crap" club. Brokeback Mountain was one such movie, it was easy for them because the story was so short. Pride and Prejudice couldn't compare because it sorely failed to live up to the TV version, not only due to the screenplay, but also weak acting. How Kiera got the Oscar's nom was beyond me. :| But the worst one was Mr. Darcy. No one can beat Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy :P Lord of the Rings didn't screw up not because of a great adaptation but because of good solid group acting and amazing CGI and of course eye candy :P You can like the gruffer filthier Dunedain or the more susceptible Boromir or the pretty elves, or cutesy hobbits, but there's something for everyone. Put it all together, I can almost forgive them for REMOVING MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS FROM THE MOVIE. As you can see, I still have some issues. :P

So back to Da Vinci Code, from this point known as DVC. First off, I hate Tom Hanks. If it weren't Tom Hanks, I might forgive the film makers for some of it, but no, I can't. The only brightspot in the entire movie was Sir Ian the gay! :D Or Sir Ian McKellen a.k.a. Gandalf a.k.a. Magneto a.k.a. Sir Leigh Teabing. [no srsly, I call him that in a totally affectionate way because he's gay and an activist :P he supposedly even requested for a gay storyline for Magneto. apparently he was the only who read Marvel comics because the comics are so wrong. lol] His acting although great, couldn't save the show. Which was surprisingly ruined not by Tom Hanks, but by the writers.

*spoilers for the movie from hereon*

At first I thought the movie was being more controversial than the book, but then as the movie progressed, I realised that it was not so. The book never said who was wrong or right, it didn't point fingers at anyone. You could see that there was not one character who was truly evil or at fault. There was just different degrees of what you would do for what you believed in. For Sir Teabing, he believed in what he perceives as the truth and thinking the Priory betrayed the world at large, he took active steps to do what he thought the Priory was supposed to. Bishop Aringarosa was driven to desperation by the Vatican's choice to retract their support for the Opus Dei, took measures to try to save his religion. Silas's childhood marred his adulthood, his only friends the Bishop and his god. Not to say that any of it excuses murder, but it provides a reason for it. Nothing is ever clearcut in reality, but the movie tried to make it so, while the book acknowledges the blurry edges.

And that is essentially my main peeve with the movie. In trying to draw distinct lines, they demonised Bishop Aringarosa, Silas, Sir Teabing, Remy and the whole Council of Shadows. WTF was with that?! They're all just people who were driven by circumstances. I believe that everyone is essentially capable of murder. But most of us just never have to face circumstances which fling us head first into situations where we face morally challenging questions. And then they made Robert Langdon a hero way smarter than he was. This part I hate because of Tom Hanks. I mean, if it were someone else, I might not have minded as much. He never had eidetic memory, and Sophie was the one who figured out the "so dark the con of man" was an anagram. Or something. I quote from memory that she said "I missed the first 2, I wasn't about to miss this one"

And when Robert Langdon argued so heatedly with Sir Leigh Teabing I almost screamed oh for gods sake someone stick a sock in his mouth.

Also, the cinematography was bad, I mean, hello? the whole lights flaring fade off into random bits of the past? eew? the whole Silas's memory bit was like overexposure-city. Although young Silas is so cute. Can't say the same for Paul Bettany. Also, I don't wanna watch X3, I wanna watch X4 if there is one, or which ever one where there was Gambit :D I had a totally random dream with him in it just the other day, which made me wake up and go wtf?!

For full details on everything I hate about the movie, talk to Flora, I bitched every 5 minutes during the show :P

argh. the movie sucked balls. big time.

take a look in my fridge!

I've really nothing to post about :P

dr. viggo!

Viggo received a honourary degree from his alma mater recently, and this is part of his speech when he went up on stage. :) I saw a clip of it and everyone was clapping :D

read it! :P

Twenty-six years ago, I ended up being the lone graduating senior not wearing the cap and gown, much to my mother's dismay. To make a long and not very exciting story reasonably short: My motive for doing this was because, like some of my classmates, I was concerned about what we felt were unfair labor practices by the manufacturer of our caps and gowns. Consequently, several among us decided to make a silent show of protest by wearing white armbands in lieu of our caps and gowns. I'm sure that others understandably chose not to go through with this symbolic gesture because they wished to avoid the risk of offending or disrespecting their families and this university. Our president and today's posthumous honoree, the late Dr.Frank Piskor, as well as our commencement speaker, the late Senator (Daniel Patrick) Moynihan of New York, seemed only mildly puzzled by my brief, inexplicably unrobed appearance onstage. I'm sure the senator had no idea why I removed my white armband and handed it to him as I collected my diploma. Probably he thought it was some kind of fraternity prank.

While I regret any embarrassment I may have caused my family – and although I did feel a bit foolish when I realized I was alone in showing up without cap and gown – I do not regret the gesture or the sentiment behind it. I don't in any way question those whose common sense kept them from joining me that day, and I am not claiming any moral high ground. What I'm trying to say, in a roundabout way, is that activism is not a dirty word. Much has changed in this country and the world since 1980, but the value of active citizenship is greater than ever. Making an earnest attempt to connect with people and issues outside of one's own limited personal circle will always be worthwhile. My liberal arts education at St. Lawrence taught me as much, and forthat I am grateful. Perhaps the most important lesson I received at this university was to try and remember that, to quote Thomas Paine, "my country is the world, and my religion is to do good." Perhaps some parents in the audience, considering the high cost of tuition, might feel that this sort of education is pretty damned expensive. I believe, however, that the lack of just such education can prove to be a lot more expensive for society in the long run.

When calculatedly dishonest and self-serving behavior is increasingly becoming the norm from many of those holding high political positions in the United States, it is thoughtful individuals such as you, the members of the Class of 2006, who can help mend the frayed moral fabric of the nation by your personal example. Whether you see yourselves as so-called "liberals," "conservatives" or some other political persuasion – or none at all – you now, by virtue of your liberal arts education, ought to be qualified to ask intelligent questions and not be intimidated or stifled by unreasoned argument, no matter how forcefully it is presented. This, of course, goes for you non-U.S.citizen graduates as well. I'm certainly not asking anyone to run outand burn down City Hall, or to necessarily engage in any overt protest.I simply advocate your continuing to explore being involved citizens. Don't ever be afraid to ask the question, "why?," or as most small children do, to repeat that question as many times as you receive an unsatisfactory answer. Inquiring minds are essential to a healthy society, and to making an individual art out of living. With apologies to any Latin scholars for my pronunciation, I offer the following epigram:

"Ducunt volentum fata, nolentum trahunt."

For non-Latin scholars, that translates as: "Fate leads those who are willing. The unwilling it drags." Or, if you prefer your words of warning from a Greek, Plato once said that "One of the penalties of refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors." Recent election results and subsequent political appointments in this country seem to bear that admonishment out.

Since I'm making such a point of promoting socio-political engagement – as Professors Wells and Hinchman, among others, taught me to do here at St. Lawrence – what specific issue can I leave you consider? In honor of my maternal grandfather, the respected ophthalmologist Dr. Walter S.Atkinson, who received an honorary degree from St. Lawrence in 1958 –the year I was born – I ask you to reflect on the sorry state of this country's health care system.

... and then he goes on about America's healthcare...

Among the most revered of teachings in any religion or spiritual code of ethics, including those attributed to Jesus Christ, is the admonition to care for the least fortunate among us. This lesson seems to have gone unheeded by any in the health care and insurance business, and, most tellingly, by the politicians who do their often uncharitable and obstructionist bidding. This is especially galling in light of how many of these same politicians regularly trumpet their avowed Christian values as badges of honor and electibility.

Doctors like my cousin, Margot Remington of Watertown, New York, are constantly put in awkward positions by this state of affairs. They cannot be expected, through occasional acts of charity to patients who cannot afford needed care, and in spite of suffocating amounts ofunnecessary paperwork, to make up for the serious shortcomings of ourantiquated and, for most Americans, prohibitively expensive health caresystem.

People cannot be mentally focused, positive and actively engaged citizens if they are constantly worried that the only thing keeping them from financial ruin is to dangerously delay seeking or altogether deny themselves and their dependents necessary medical attention. You can, if you will, as informed individuals, do something – however little – to call attention to this most important problem in your owncommunities. I hope you will somehow get involved in this issue, because it one that sooner or later affects us all. As the poet W.H.Auden put it:

"There is no such thing as the State
And no one exists alone;
Hunger allows no choice
To the citizen or the police;
We must love another or die."

Here's wishing you all a shining summer, and exemplary lives as citizens of the world. Go get 'em.

I feel like a traitor but...

some things can't be helped.

Starting next season, I'll be almost a Chelsea fan. *big big sigh*

Ballack, why oh why do you have to go to Chelsea?? It's like, you're making me question my love for ManU! How can I support both teams at a go? :( I mean, this is different from liking Arsenal for all its hot players. This is like ManU's new arch-nemesis. [the old being Liverpool] :( speaking of Arsenal's hot players, I was totally keeping my eyes trained on Fabregas during the Barca match cause um, yeah. Fabregas is love :D

BUT BALLACK IS MORE LOVE. :(

So, I'll cheer everytime Ballack scores or assists. Or does anything awesome. And in every game except when he plays ManU :(

Baaaaaah Morinho! :(

i wish i had something new to say

my blog is totally boring me. I think the white and blueness of it makes me feel so dull. SO, I'm using a default one again :P

Here's a picture of my latest purchases:

I blame it on everyone who's been telling me how good chanel makeup is. :) I wanted a different 2-way, but the salesgirl said this one is the one they're promoting cause it's new and whatevers, so I bought it. I realised I've become such a makeup snob! It's like the cheapest thing I let near my face is my bodyshop eyebrow thing, and it's only because it's the only powder I can find. I heard Shiseido might have the eyebrow powder, I'll check it out after this is finished. Other than that, my cheapest stuff are MAC. I realised I despise drugstore makeup brands. I feel so elitist omg!

also, I wish I could get fairer :(

Zouk last night was like, awesome.

I think so cause like I hadn't had much fun or any fun the last few times I went. I was so sleepy that by 12.30 I was too weary to club, and so I always left early. Last night was awesome because I was super awake and I had a lot to drink and yeaaaaah. :P

Flora was awesome to meet me for dinner before going to Zouk cause I woke up late and didn't get dinner at home, then we went to Zouk and saw some girl in white looking all ghostly and such. It was a Supernatural stunt and I went all "OMG SUPERNATURAL SQUEEEEEEE" when I realised what it was about, to Flora and she bore it all rather stoically.

Anyhow there was a tonne of Eusoff people and in general, a lot of NUS students that Zouk hit maximum capacity.. Pauline came with Jovin and Jeremy and they were both stuck outside, but Pauline and Lily came in anywaaay.

omg i don't know how people can blog this way. it's tedious.

i went clubbing and had fun due to the fact that i was boozed up. supper was great and i wanna do it again!

and i found scandalous pictures on my phone. ahahh oops.

Germany!

Football is awesome. No srsly, aside from all the great sportsy stuff, where else to get so many hot guys being so hands on...

Aside from that, I love my holidays! I mean, it's been great just staying home and doing nothing but surfing the net and reading books and playing my Open For Business EP from Sims. :) I mean going out and all should be fun, but after having to get out for classes for so long, what I really wish for is just to stay home all day long and lounge around, and being a bum :) I moved my bed so now it's against the table and my room kinda looks like hostel except it's bigger and air-conditioned and my bed rocks. I mean there's finally space for me to throw stuff all over my bed. Right now there's a towel, a book and tonnes of mini-stinkys. :) Back in hostel there was no hope of seeing this happen. PAH

Will be clubbing tomorrow. Msg me if you're going! :) or rather, i'll probably msg everyone. heh.

Draco and the Malfoys

Click to listen!

It's the song My Dad Is Rich. It's completely lame but kinda cute too 'cause it's by Draco & the Malfoys.

the other song:

Potions Yesterday

This totally feeds my HP Harry & Draco obsession, I mean, Draco has totally become a 3 dimensional character in HBP! plus book-verse Draco sounds awesome. Movie!Draco is.... kinda fugly. But according his myspace, he's bisexual. Like, hey which teenage movie actor would be so open about it?

the cutest aids awareness video you'll ever see

warnings: teh gay sex, sims style! :D

or watch it here if you hate youtube... http://www.devilducky.com/media/45030/

edit: omg I didn't know it would show that scene especially. :o
